Baltic Sea Day is officially celebrated in Finland every last Thursday in August. This year, Baltic Sea Day will be celebrated on Thursday, August 29, 2024.
Baltic Sea Day is an annual holiday in honor of the sea started by the John Nurminen Foundation. The goal of the day is to inspire people to enjoy the unique Baltic Sea and to make concrete actions and promises for its benefit. In addition to the celebration, the purpose of the Baltic Sea Day is to increase knowledge about the diverse nature, culture and history of the sea.
Tips for schools on how to celebrate the Baltic Sea Day at schools:
A new UNESCO BSP school network tradition: International Baltic Sea Day 29 August – 14 September 2024
In August 2024, the first international Baltic Sea Day will be celebrated, when Unesco BSP schools celebrate the first international Baltic Sea Day.
Since schools in other Baltic Sea countries only start in September, Baltic Sea Day is always celebrated from the last Thursday of August to mid-September. This school year, the day will be celebrated from August 29 to September 14, 2024. Instead of a day, you can also spend a week. In addition, it is important that students and teachers participate in the planning and celebration of the day, and that the expertise of partners is also used in the planning and implementation.
In UNESCO BSP schools, in addition to the Baltic Sea, we want to emphasize sustainable development. In 2024, the themes are especially connections, the future and heritage. The goal is also for the actors of the UNESCO BSP school network to meet on different sides of the Baltic Sea and celebrate Baltic Sea Day together. The first meeting will be in Vaasa on August 28-31, 2024, when we will consider the connection between world heritage and sustainable development in the activities of UNESCO BSP schools.
